The following terms are used often in our industry

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning .

AFUE - This is a percentage measurement of a furnace's heating efficiency. The higher the AFUE, the more efficient the furnace. The initials stand for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency.

SEER - This is a measurement of the efficiency of cooling products. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the cooling product. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.

HSPF - This is a measurement of a heat pump's heating efficiency. The higher the HSPF, the more efficient the heat pump's heating performance. HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal performance Factor.

BTU - British Thermal Unit. This is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. This is how we measure heat loss . for example, lets say you have a window in your home that is 2 foot by 2 foot and it is a double pane window with clear glass . Let’s also assume there are no blinds on this window and it is facing south . Further, let's assume it is a 0 degree day you are trying to maintain a 70 degree temperature inside this window . It would require 154 BTUs per hour to make up for the cold penetrating through the glass. Now if you keep in mind that a one ton unit produces 12000 BTUs per hour and 400 cfm. Then you can see how we calculate the size of the system heating your home.

CFM - cubic feet per minute - normally we are talking about the amount of air flowing through your ducts

GPH - Gallons Per Hour. An oil furnace. is measured in BTUs as well as gph of oil consumption

COP - Coefficient Of Performance. A ratio that compares a heat pump system's heating efficiency to that of electric resistance heat.

Ambient Temperature - this is the air temperature (usually the outdoor air temperature)

Split System - this is when you would have a unit inside your home and a unit outside The two would be connected by a copper refrigerant line

Condensing Unit - This is the outdoor section of a split system

Air Handler - This is the indoor section of a split system.

Heat Pump - A unit that both cools and heats . A heat pump system can be either a split system or a packaged system

Packaged System - Packaged units provide both heating and cooling and unlike a split system it is self contained in one unit
